I find that the vast majority of my portraits are dogs. Now, I consider myself a “dog person,” but we should not forget cats. Cats were revered in ancient Egypt, and captured in art and sculpture many times. Some speculate the original head of the Sphinx was a cat. (The current head was added long after the original structure was built.) Cats have a unique coat, since each hair is filled with air, and bounces back to its natural state almost immediately.
Cats’ eyes are quite different from dogs’ eyes. Dogs’ eyes tend to be very human-like, with a rounded iris. Cats’ eyes have a rounded cornea but a flat iris. And, of course, the cats’ irises are slit, instead of round. All of which makes them just more unique.
So if you are contemplating a pet portrait, don’t forget about your feline friends. They make great portraits as well.
Here’s the latest pet/cat portrait. Enjoy, and thanks.
